Chris Chambers released by Bolts

November 3, 2009

The San Diego Chargers decided to cut wide receiver Chris Chambers. He had a key catch in a 24-16 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Coach Norv Turner told the press the Chargers released Chambers because of the emergence of wide out Malcom Floyd and the need to ink a linebacker after Tim Dobbins was sidelined due to an injury that came against the Raiders. “Floyd was promoted on Sunday over Chambers, whose production had dropped off dramatically this season. Chambers, a nine-year veteran out of Wisconsin, had just nine receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown in seven games.” The Bolts acquired Chambers during the 2007 season from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2008 second-round draft pick. Miami used that pick (No. 57 overall) to select their franchise quarterback Chad Henne. Chambers was productive after the trade, catching 35 passed for 555 yards and four touchdowns in just 10 games. He helped the Bolts get to the AFC Championship. Any team that decides to pick up Chambers on waivers will be required to shell out the balance of his $4.55 million base salary. If the wide receiver clears waivers, he will be entitled to collect the remaining $2.4 as termination salary. Chambers will receive that amount even if he inks a deal with a new team as an unrestricted free agent.
