During Chargers training camp this week, Vaughn Martin displayed natural athleticism. His burst of speed after the snap impressed everyone, especially for a guy that size. Martin is a big guy, but he is light on his feet. Some NFL experts are comparing him to Luis Castillo and Igor Olshansky. The rookie hasĀ nice rip movements that he has been working on. During practice, he was lined up at right defensive end most of the time, and on a couple of plays he was lined up at what’s called a wide five technique on the back side. On these plays, Martin had to hustle in pursuit since the player was carrying the ball on the opposite of the field. “Martin still has a lot of learning to do, both technique-wise as well as in the playbook. That will all come with coaching. What can’t be coached, however, is the man’s pure athleticism. Martin’s another guy to watch once the pads come on.”
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Safety Kevin Ellison agreed to a four-year contract. Terms of the deal was not released. The Chargers were pushing for a four year deal while Ellison and his agent wanted a three year contract. Chargers head coach Turner expressed his displeasure over Ellison’s absence at the start of training camp, and said it could affect his ability to make the roster.
