Shawne Merriman’s Impact

June 23, 2009

The San Diego Chargers’ defense has an opportunity to play at a very high level this year. But the big question is will Shawne Merriman come back from an injury and compete the way he use to? His last full season was 2007, when the tough linebacker registered 12 and a half sacks. Will he be able to “come off the edge with speed, use his power at the point of attack and show the same ability to shed blockers and get to the quarterback – allowing the Chargers secondary to play with a ball-hawking mentality?” If the linebacker can return and show us the same high talent and high energy we are use to seeing, the Chargers will be a complete football team. With Philip Rivers leading the charge down the field and L.T. in the backfield, this team should win the AFC West and have a great shot at the Super Bowl this year. Rivers came off a stellar 2008-2009 season, where he threw over 30 TDs. A healthy L.T. in the lineup should drastically improve the chargers’ offensive, making them a force to reckon with on the ground. Chargers’ fans are just going to have to see if Merriman can play aggressive, smash mouth football.
