Larry English And Shawn Merriman

April 30, 2009

We all know the force that Shawn Merriman brings to the field. But the Chargers most likely selected Larry English in the first round not only because of his athletic ability, but also to replace Merriman if his contract demands don’t come through this coming year. Bolthype.com had this too say about the situation: The one concerning aspect of his drafting is that it is yet another sign that Merriman is not going to be a Charger for as long as we’d all like him to be. Much has been written about Merriman’s future contract demands, and the Chargers’ concerns about his ability to stay healthy. Add to the mix a capable replacement in English (if everything goes according to plan), and Merriman could be gone before you know it.” As of right now, Merriman looks like he will be a Charger through 2009. What about 2010? Would A.J. use  the franchise tag to keep his key player? No, why would he offer him a 1-year deal, just to see him walk away with a little more money in his pocket. If English turns out to be an excellent player, don’t be surprised if Merriman is released to the highest bidder.
