Although there is speculation swirling whether or not the San Diego Chargers will be moving to another city like Los Angeles, nothing is going to happen before the 2009 season. The Chargers’ general counsel, Mark Fabiani, reassured that the team was in San Diego for 2009, but he wasn’t going to say anything further about future plans. Fabiani said, “I’m not a fortune teller. You have to be realistic. We’re almost certainly closer to the end of the process than the beginning. This ownership has been very patient. The best thing San Diego has going for it is patient ownership.”
A motivating factor for the Chargers may be the fine they would have to pay for leaving San Diego. To leave in 2009, it would have cost the team some $56 million dollars. The penalty drops in the coming years, meaning if they chose to leave in two years their penalty is more than cut in half to $25.8 million. The team has been looking for a site for a new stadium for some time with little luck. The team caused more speculation when they got a deal recently to start marketing in Los Angeles and Orange County. Get your San Diego Chargers tickets from StubHub.com.
