Forget losing gracefully. The Denver Broncos weren’t ready to wish the San Diego Chargers good luck against the Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs, especially not Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler. When asked about San Diego’s chances, he said, “These guys? San Diego? No, I don’t think so. I think Indy’ll handle ‘em pretty good. We really can’t stop anybody, and that’s the bottom line.”
It is slightly ironic that Cutler is blaming the Broncos’ staggering 52-21 loss to the Chargers completely on the defense. While Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was 15 of 20 for 207 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 141.0, Cutler was 33 of 49 for 316 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a rating of 74.9. The Broncos defense also tallied more sacks than the Chargers and a similar number of tackles.
The Broncos have a reason to pout. They went from being a shoe-in for the division win to finishing second best. The heart-breaking process also led to the firing of longtime coach Mike Shanahan, which will make watching the Chargers go to the playoffs in their place even more difficult.
