Cason Fits Like a Glove

July 31, 2008

If the San Diego Chargers had any doubts about the solidity of their nickel cornerback position, Antoine Cason has answered them all.  He was the Chargers’ first-round draft pick and was chosen 27th overall.  He has had to learn fast since the position he is stepping into varies greatly from the way he played at Arizona.  He told ESPN, “I didn’t realize it was so different. That’s been the biggest difference of the NFL camp from college. I am basically learning a new position. But I have great coaching and it is going very well. But it is a learning experience every day.”

Having new players step up is incredibly important at this point in the game.  There is already buzz about the Chargers making a run for the Super Bowl this season, and they will need every position running full throttle to accomplish that.  Cason has made a name for himself as the man who is adept at putting himself between the ball and the receiver.  As a result, he tallied a solid number of interceptions during his college career.  He is going to give fans another reason to come see games, so get San Diego Chargers tickets from StubHub.com.

Rivers and Brees Both Won in Tough Decision

July 30, 2008

Back in 2005, Chargers fans were wondering what would happen with their quarterback situation.  Drew Brees was firmly at the helm of the offense while Philip Rivers was sitting the bench.  He was itching to get onto the field, and a late-season injury put him poised to take over.  But Brees wasn’t down and out yet.  Rivers wasn’t ready to take the lead that way, either and wanted to earn it.  In the end, Brees felt like he didn’t have everyone in the franchise’s confidence and accepted a position with the New Orleans Saints.   He told the North County Times about the experience, “I guess sometimes things happen and you wonder why they are happening —- ‘Why is this happening to me?’ and ‘This isn’t the way it’s supposed to be’ —- but you’ve just got to know that God has a plan for you and our plan was to go to New Orleans.”

Now, it looks like the best decision for both quarterbacks.  Brees has led the Saints to successful seasons and seemed to be just what the doctor ordered both for the football team and for the city, which was recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Obviously, Rivers didn’t fare any worse with the deal and has been just as successful at the head of the Chargers.  Maybe Brees was right, everything happens for a reason.

Clary Happy With Roster Spot

July 29, 2008

As the old saying goes, what a difference a year makes.  Last year, Jeromey Clary wasn’t sure he was going to be on the Chargers’ lineup.  He was thisclose to being cut from the team during the offseason, but narrowly squeaked by.  At the end of last year, all of his hard work paid off as the right tackle was able to start the last five regular season games.  In part thanks to Clary, the Chargers won all of those games and he had proved himself worthy of a roster spot.

Fast forward to this year, and Clary is working hard to keep that spot.  He is thankful to not have the stress during training camp of not knowing if the team will cut you or not, and he is also ready to give his all again this season.  His teammates have taken notice of his hard work, including quarterback Philip Rivers, who told the North County Times, “He really stepped up big and came in there and played great. He’s earned that spot, and I know he’s a guy that’s not going to relax. He keeps working and grinding to get better every day.”

The Luis Castillo deal: Great for the Chargers?

July 25, 2008

Look at that question in the headline, look at Castillo’s performance, and you know the answer is a definite yes.

Noted for being the first Dominican player in the NFL, Castillo has been a great addition to the Chargers defensive line. He’s part of the reason why the Chargers have actually become so well known for their defense, and surely will continue to contribute to their successes, hopefully even leading them to the Super Bowl.

That strong defense has made the odds favorable for San Diego if there’s a Chargers versus New England Patriots showdown. Let’s hope there is–it’ll be a great, dramatic game, and Luis Castillo will undoubtedly be a big part of it.

Chargers: Week in review

July 24, 2008

Wow, busy week for the San Diego home team. Lots going on, as the Bleacher Report noted recently. If you haven’t been following the news too closely, you might have missed some of the changes in personnel. To begin with, the biggest news has been Luis Castillo’s brand-spankin’ new contract, extending his run with the Bolts for another five years and receiving $43 million in trade. Nice, one Luis. And nice one, Chargers! Castillo has been a major addition to the team, and sure definitely help their Super Bowl potential.

Also noted in the Report is the loss of Eric Parker, a veteran wide-receiver for whom no trade could be found. As Parker was packing, he might have said hello to new member Antione Cason, a cornerback who is now officially on the team.

Chargers appreciate quarterback Phillip Rivers

July 23, 2008

Why the love for Phillip Rivers? Well, it’s hard not to be friendly toward a guy who’s so friendly.

As Alex Marvez reports on Fox Sports, Rivers has “blossomed” in the past two seasons, becoming an integral part of the team by encouraging the other players, whether they’re having a tough time, recovering from an injury or just passing him in the hall. Marvez quotes a source who points out that it’s not very typical to see a quarterback act that way. Many of them let ego get in the way, and don’t talk to anyone ever. But Rivers is  just a nice guy, and certainly a welcome member of the team.

It hasn’t always been that way. For a while, Rivers was known for talking–but not in a positive way. It’s an interesting feature article. Read it here.

Chargers fans may have trouble with those express buses

July 22, 2008

According to the Union-Tribune, Chargers fans better have some alternative travel plans in the future when they attend games. For a long while, they could ride express buses provided by city services. But a new federal law coming into effect will define those buses as charters. Federal law prohibits federal fund recipients from running charters, says a transportation authority spokesman in the article.

That means the 75 to 80 buses that are often used to transport thousands of Chargers fans to the Q won’t be there. This will definitely make things a little difficult, but with some planning, every fan should be able to see the game and have fun.

While you’re making alternate plans, stop over at Stubhub.com and grab those San Diego Chargers tickets you’ve been meaning to buy.

Chargers better than Pats?

July 21, 2008

Sean Crow of the Bleacher Report is looking to create some sparks with his latest article. Specifically, New England Patriots fans are going to be a bit miffed–or maybe just incredulous–over his proposition that the team to watch in the AFC will be the San Diego Chargers.

This admission doesn’t come easily, he says. “It pains me, it really pains me” is how he begins the article.

But he has some logic and facts to back up the argument, and there’s some very sound reasoning to be found. They’re a solid defensive team, one that won’t buckle under the assaults from the Pats when they’re on the gridiron. Furthermore, they’re offense is “custom-made” to defeat the Patriots. Want to read more? You can find the article here.

After you finish it, die-hard Chargers fans will be probably be in a better mood. Ride that wave as far as it can go–get San Diego Chargers tickets on Stubhub.com and bring your enthusiasm to the game.

Thoughts From Tomlinson

July 18, 2008

LaDainian Tomlinson has his own theory on the Brett Favre situation.  Tomlinson believes that Favre was forced to retire prematurely that the Green Bay Packers are making a huge mistake in not welcoming him back on the team.  Favre, who is 38-years-old retired in March after completely 17 seasons in the NFL.  In an interview with FOX news after the fact that he felt pressure at the time to make a decision.  Favre was instrumental in helping to lead the Packers to within a win of the Super Bowl last season.

LaDanian Tomlinson was quoted on Bloomberg television as saying, “If he wants to come back and play football, then let him come back.  I think that he was forced to retire prematurely.  He finally realized that’s not what he wants to do.”  Keep up with the latest on Brett Favre and also keep up with Tomlinson with your own pair of San Diego Chargers tickets.
