Can the Chargers Mimic Their 2004 Draft

April 25, 2007

Recently a study on the San Diego Chargers’ 2004 draft picks was analyzed, and although the Chargers of 2004 needed much improvement the draft picks were the start to a winning future. In 2004 the Chargers picked up Eli Manning in the first round and traded him for Philip Rivers, Nate Kaeding, and Shawne Merriman.

Igor Olshansky, Nick Hardwick, Shaun Phillips, Dave Ball, Michael Turner, Ryan Krause, Ryon Bingham, Shane Olivea and Carlos Joseph were also picked up in the second to seventh round. Let’s wrap this up by saying the 2004 draft was the kick-off to a whole new Charger ball club in producing eight starters and four Pro Bowl players. I’d say that is not too shabby.

The San Diego Chargers have been scouting a sidekick for Vincent Jackson and have confirmed a second interview with another wide receiver as of today, without confirming any deal talks. Any addition to the position must have an excellent feel for the game and be a valuable asset in areas of coverage and complementing the current team receivers. We are just days away from finding out new team members. No matter the turnout you can get your home game tickets through StubHub.com.

Charger Free Agent Update

April 24, 2007

The San Diego Chargers have lost a few free agents, signed a few free agents, and still have some unsigned free agents.  For 2007 The Chargers have given up line backer Donnie Edwards to the Kansas City Chiefs, wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim to the Miami Dolphins, and tight end Ryan Krause to the Cleveland Browns.

The Chargers have locked outside guard Kris Dielman into a six year deal, line backer Carlos Polk into a one year deal, and center Cory Withrow a three year deal.  The Chargers are still holding onto unsigned free agents wide receiver Keenan McCardell, safety Terrence Kiel, outside guard Leander Jordan, line backer Randall Godfrey, and line backer Steve Foley.

This is a free agent update in preparation for this weekends draft.  Last year San Diego seemed to do fairly well with their draft picks, and holds onto a good starting line for this next season. Stay tuned for the latest news and get your game day tickets at StubHub.com.

Chargers Draft Strategy

April 23, 2007

Draft time is around the corner and the San Diego Chargers starting line is set, not leaving much room for improvement as two time division champs in the last three seasons.  This draft the team will be focusing on depth, which is good because their first eight picks will be coming at 30 overall and that is not a great position for a team looking to fill holes.  Many teams acquire their worst setbacks when injuries happen.  If a team does not have a satisfactory replacement player a hole is created and more often than not the season goes downhill from there.

General Manager AJ Smith is still working to trade a third round pick or earlier by sacrificing backup running back Michael Turner with the idea of packaging that pick with his number 30 so they can go up in the draft.  Although safety LaRon Landry of LSU is said to be the hottest pick this draft, the Chargers might have a chance at Florida’s Reggie Nelson who will most likely go in the middle of the first round.  Stay tuned for the latest draft news and get your 2007 NFL season tickets through StubHub.com.

Doc Remembered Fondly by San Diego

April 19, 2007

The San Diego Chargers and affiliated organizations have taken the opportunity to honor a favored former member of their team.  “Doc” Sid Brooks was the Chargers’ equipment manager for nearly 20 years, from 1973-2000.  Brooks died at the age of 72, but will be remembered as a real people person, popular with the players, and friend to the coaches and executives.  A service is scheduled for Friday morning at the Immaculata of the University of San Diego.

In 2006 Brooks published a book titled ‘Sid Brooks’ Tales From the San Diego chargers Locker Room,’ which has become a favorite among true Charger fans.   In a constantly changing environment Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts remembers “the constant, though, was Doc. As players, we could always count on seeing Doc bright and early, every morning, all year long in the locker room. He always boasted a smile and a quip.”

The San Diego Chargers will play on, and hopefully play a better season in 2007.  You can support them by buying tickets to their home games, and you can get your tickets through StubHub.com.

Football Fashion Premier

April 6, 2007

It is assumed that every sports fan knows the San Diego professional ball teams have redesigned their uniforms for the 2007 season, but just in case you didn’t know we’ll take a minute to update you on the San Diego Chargers’ revamp.  Really it is just a few details that are meant to make the uniforms more sexy, sleek and stylish while adding comfort and maneuverability for the players.

Upon examination fans will see that the bolt on the shoulder and down the thigh has taken a more natural, curved form with an added powder blue border for more definition.  The uniforms are to be made of a more form fitting, breathable material with the players comfort in mind.  The arms and overall fit of the uniforms have been changed slightly to minimize any loose material making for a more sleek form fitting appearance.

Chargers’ linebacker Shaun Phillips said, “I think it’s hot.”  “Our new uniform [is] a great fashion statement, ” ProBowler Kassim Osgood added.  The uniforms were presented in a fashion show featuring a handful of key players modeling the new uniforms.  Quarterback Philip Rivers was quoted, “It has all of the same colors, but it has been tweaked for this team,” pointing out that, “You know it’s really an honor that they’ve chosen out team to be the first to wear this new uniform.”

“It’s time for a new tradition in San Diego and our new uniform is just the thing to get that tradition started.  I love the look, the fabric, the design… everything.  It’s more of an athletic look,” was ProBown linebacker Shawne Merriman’s opinion.    Hopefully this new uniform will help the San Diego Charger’s during the 2007 NFL season.  Support your team from a stadium seat; reserve your tickets through StubHub.com

Buffalo Bills’ Michael Turner?

April 4, 2007

San Diego Chargers’ running back Michael Turner, number 33, met with Buffalo Bills today.  The prospect of the Bills scouting Turner and running back Kevan Barlow who is a free agent for the New York Jets for one more season was over shadowed by the other commotions the Chargers have been experiencing.  Nothing was decided or announced concerning the meeting, but what is known is the Bills would be looking at a hefty sum to acquire Turner including their first and third round draft picks.

Turner has acquired a high value ranking at the top of players in his position second only to MVP LaDainian Tomlinson.  Turner could be accompanying Bills’ current running back Anthony Thomas if a trade does happen, however there is talk that the Tennessee Titans are also looking at Turner.  His record is steady and speaks for itself with an average of 26.5 yards on return kicks, 6.3 yard average per carry, 502 yards rushing, and 2 touchdowns for the 2006 NFL season.  See Turner this next NFL season and get your tickets at StubHub.com.
