A Turner for the Better?

February 20, 2007

For better or worse the Chargers suddenly have a head coach again.  Norv Turner was signed to a four-year contract yesterday, only a week after San Diego let Marty Schottenheimer go.

Mixed reaction to the news came from Chargers fans, who may like that Norv Turner has experience as the Charger’s offensive coordinator in 2001, but didn’t like his head coaching record.  Overall, Turner is 58-82-1 in his seasons with Oakland and Washington.

One must consider that Turner was given the keys to NFL teams that were clearly awful in his previous NFL head coaching experience.  He did very well as the Cowboy’s offensive coordinator during their domination in the early 1990s, and recently helped the 49ers beef up their offense last season.

Turner will be given a team that needs very little to get to the postseason, but will demand immediate success once there.

The Chargers also filled the defensive coordinator position with Ted Cottrell, and found a new linebacker coach with Ron Rivera.

Schotts Fired! Requesting Backup!

February 13, 2007

Marty Schottenheimer was the latest coach in the NFL to be taken out back to the ‘ol blood-stained chopping stump.  Head coaching heads split from their teams so fast it would make your head spin.  So we’ve all learned never to grow too accustomed to a guy in a headset.

The next in line for Marty’s job probably would have been redundantly named offensive coordinator Cam Cameron or defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.  Oh, wait; neither one’s around anymore.

At 11:45 tonight I’m expecting three similar San Diego Craigslist wanted ads under skilled trade or temp work.  Immediate positions available! 14-win Southern California pro football team seeks a grumpy, run-oriented font office whipping boy/yes-man to take team deep into playoffs— or else. Compensation: DOE.  Failure: DOA.

Luckily, the Chargers have all summer to sort out the coaching positions.  Until then, check out StubHub.com for Chargers season tickets.  That is, unless you don’t get the job as one of the three new sideline season ticket holders.
